The job I have now, working at a bookstore, is a top contender. Being around, and talking to literate customers about, books all day is like a dream come true. And bonus feature: sorting books in alphabetical order scratches a low-level OCD itch I seem to have.
However, I think I might just barely prefer a job I had nearly three decades ago: math instructor at a community college. I taught night courses there, and the students, who were almost all working during the day and taking night classes to improve their career prospects (or just to learn more) were all super grateful for my efforts (which were considerable). I don’t know that I have ever been so appreciated!
