Gardening: Flowers Or Vegetables?

A man’s gotta eat, so I’m going with vegetables on this one. But I do appreciate how flowers make the world a more beautiful place (and often helps it smell nicer, too).
I love heirloom vegetable gardening! This year, my garden has two varieties of beans, a mix of lettuce, arugula, zucchini, summer squash, onions, two types of sweet peppers, and (of course) several varieties of tomatoes.
If I could only grow one it would have to be my first love, vegetables. Thankfully I don’t have to choose because I truly enjoy my flower garden….which does happen to have several edible specimens. 😉
I love fresh veggies from my garden, but they do require so much work! My perennial beds, on the other hand, keep giving and giving, and they keep feeding the bees and butterflies. They make the neighborhood prettier for everybody, too. I get comments all the time from the many people who walk here.
This year, the first summer of my retirement, I planted no veggies at all, to get a break from all that responsibility. I will surely do my usual tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, cukes, maybe something more, next season.
