  1. Book: While I read several books in 2023, only one was released in 2023. That said, “Poverty, by America,” by Matthew Desmond, fits a top billing for its more stinging and systemic look at, well, poverty by America.

    Movie: Hands down, “Barbie”

TV: “Succession” (Season 4), followed closely by “Somebody, Somewhere” (Season 2)–totally different types of shows, by the way.

Music: My favorite song is Amanda Shires & Bobbie Nelson’s cover of “Always on My Mind.” For my favorite album, top billing is difficult. But to send some music lovers her way, I’ll go with Antje Duvekot’s “New Wild West,” followed closely by boy genius’s, “the record.”

  2. Hmmm. Does this mean stuff new in 2023, or stuff that I first heard or watched in 2023? I suppose I’ll go with the latter. My selections:

Book: Deep Survival by Laurence Gonzales
Non-fiction, an exploration of why some people survive extreme danger, while others don’t. Is there something we can learn to apply to our own lives? Fascinating, and I think about and talk about it frequently, months later.

    Movie: Barbie
This might be the only movie I saw in the theater this year. I can’t believe it got made, but I am glad it did!

TV Show: The Muppets Mayhem (Disney+)
I watched a lot of TV this year, but I don’t think I enjoyed a show more than I did this one. It’s times like this I think I never grew up.

    Music: ???
Ooof. I didn’t listen to much new music this year. With the drastic changes to the music industry, I’ve lost ways of discovering new music.
