While it is clearly the case that the most powerful songs have a marriage of lyrics and music, given the choice here I’m going to select music. After all, you can have an emotionally charged instrumental!
Being a writer at heart, I’m very lyric-oriented. After so many years of listening to music, it’s typically a great lyrical twist that makes me take notice.
The music grabs me; the lyrics keep me listening.
