Did you play a sport in high school? Or did you find yourself attending the games of one in particular, even if you didn’t play?

  1. In high school, I participated in three sports: cross-country running, distance-running track, and cheerleading. While cheerleading is what I gravitate most to now, in high school, I was most drawn to cross-country.

  2. I dabbled in wrestling and basketball, before ultimately settling on cross country track. I wasn’t very good, but it was a decent precursor to solitary, long-distance activities I eventually preferred as an adult, like bicycle touring, triathlon racing, and distance running.

  3. My father was a dedicated football and basketball fan of the Mt. Carroll Hawks, teams he had played for when he was in high school there. He took me to games starting in 5th or 6th grade. I continued as a fan and in high school played in the Pep and Marching Band for these games.

I have never been much of an athlete, but I sure enjoyed watching the Hawks play. “For Mt. Carroll High we’ll win this game, add glory to her name…”
