At the bookstore where I work, we have an employee favorites shelf for each one of us. I have noticed that my shelf, more than any other employee, is dominated by non-fiction books: science, history, memoir, etc.
I own, read, and enjoy fiction, but I can’t deny that over the last decade, the most memorable and impactful books I have read have been non-fiction.
My book collection includes hundreds of books and is segmented into several categories: political theory, philosophy, religion and secular humanism/atheism, gardening and healthy food choices, economics, social justice, and a bit of science and, separately, history. I have nearly every Wendell Berry book of essays. I own very few non-fiction books.
I love this question because it helps me categorize my many books. Most are on religion, spirituality, scripture, ministry, golf, especially golf psychology, and a few on peace/anti-war. A favorite author is Henri Nouwen.
