I don’t really listen to much country music, so I don’t have a dog in this fight. Forced to choose, I guess I’ll go with Johnny Cash.
I’m quite selective about which country music I listen to. I enjoy a fair amount in the alt country and outlaw country subgenres. Among prominent outlaw country artists, I own some Johnny Cash and a lot of Willie Nelson. While Johnny Cash’s cover of “Hurt” is one of my favorite songs, Willie Nelson created what I consider one of the best albums of all time, “Teatro.” Additionally, Nelson continues to produce great music that finds its way into my catalog. Willie Nelson wins in this throwdown.
This question made me immediately go to YouTube to watch Johnny Cash’s cover of Hurt. IMO it’s one of the best videos of all time. I guess for me this was a very easy one.
Great respect to both, but I’ll take Johnny over Willie. I still find Willie’s voice somewhat hard to listen to.
