I tend to travel light, so checked bag it is.
The gold standard in this regard was back in 2015, when I went to the west coast to start my cross-country bike trip. I had shipped my bicycle and all my belongings separately, so when it came time to fly, I got on the plane with nothing but the clothes on my back.
I really dislike standing at the luggage carousel, hoping my bag hasn’t been lost. I try to stick to a carry-on only policy.
Both. When I’m traveling to my destination I place a smaller bag in a max size carry-on suitcase. When I am returning home I pack the larger bag with souvenirs and gifts that I have purchased and check it, carrying on the smaller bag.
