  1. Once, after I was struck while biking home after work. I ended up with two broken knees, and was laid up for weeks. The story has a happy ending though — less than two years later I rode my bicycle all the way across the country!

  2. I have been in an ambulance twice. The first time was when I was very young. I went to a friend’s home on the second floor of a duplex. I fell down the outdoor stairs, hit my head, lost consciousness, and wasn’t found for a few hours. The fall caused a severe concussion. I don’t remember riding in the ambulance. I was hospitalized for eight days, during which I suffered from aphasia — an inability to speak intelligibly. Also, my coordination was poor and took several years to recover.

The second time was a couple of years ago. Rebecca took me to a clinic because I was having trouble breathing and my blood oxygen level (as measured by a home pulse oximeter) was very low. I believe the clinic diagnosed me with severe pneumonia. They took me by ambulance to the hospital at the University of Minnesota. Although I shouldn’t have been in this mood, I remember feeling somewhat giddy and unaware of how serious the situation was. I believe I was hospitalized for four days.
