In an environment like the current one, it can be hard to know what to do. For example, is it better to speak out and start a dialogue? Or to listen to those around you, who have different experiences and worldviews?

Of course, the answer is both. But, for now, I would prioritize listening for me. I have much learning to do with regards to systemic racism and sexism as well as how they seep into American institutions, our communities, and me. I need to listen to uncomfortable truths about how my white male privilege provides me unjust power over other populations who’ve been silenced or belittled for way too long.
As for speaking up, I need to do a better job at challenging racist and sexist speech and attitudes. Hopefully, when appropriate, I can challenge in a way that opens people’s hearts to dialogue. But even if that isn’t the result, I need to speak up.
