What States Have You Been To?

Have you traveled far and wide, or stayed close to home (or something in between)? How many of the states in your country have you been to?

Share why if you wish.

  1. Most recently, I went through 11 states during my cross-country bicycle trip:
Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan, New York, and Massachusetts.

I live in New England, and have been to all the New England states on local vacations: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.

Similarly, when I grew up, we lived in Iowa and Minnesota, and traveled to all of the neighboring states: North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, and Nebraska.

Additionally, when I was ten or eleven, my parents took me on a driving vacation throughout the west: South Dakota, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri. For a school trip, we drove across the country as well, going to Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, DC.

I’ve attended weddings in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Colorado, and Louisiana (and many states already mentioned). I’ve visited friends in Florida, California, and Alaska, and went with friends to Nevada and New Jersey.

So the states I have *not* visited are Hawaii, Washington (I believe my parents took me there when I was very young, but I don’t remember it and don’t count it), Montana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, North and South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky (I was briefly in Kentucky when I was in Cincinnati, Ohio for a hockey tournament, and we took a wrong turn on the highway and ended up in northern Kentucky, but we turned around and immediately left, so it doesn’t really count), and Delaware (I’ve driven through a corner of the state on the way to other places, but I’ve never really *been* there). I seems I need to take a trip through the South!

  2. I’ve been to all the western states except North Dakota and Texas. I’ve never been further east or to Hawaii or Alaska. We were planning a trip to Alaska this summer, but those plans are now on hold.

  3. Hmm, let’s see…

    Lived in: Minnesota.

Visited more than once: Hawaii (yes, you can shoot me now); California; Nevada; Arizona; Iowa; Wisconsin; Illinois; Florida; New York (although very briefly both times); Pennsylvania; New Jersey; Massachusetts (pretty sure Lee’s wedding was my second time there).

    Visited once:
Washington and Oregon (vacation with a one-day stop in Portland).
South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and Utah (road trip to L.A.).
Colorado and Nebraska (drove a friend’s UHaul to Denver).
North Dakota (spent one night in Fargo for work).
Arkansas, Missouri and Kansas (road trip to writing workshop; I didn’t, like, make a point of spending a night on the Kansas side of KC to add a state to my list or anything…).
    Michigan (vacation).
    Ohio (conference).
    Tennessee (College Bowl tournament).
D.C. and Virginia (another College Bowl tournament).
    North Carolina (meeting XGF’s parents).

Borderline cases: Indiana (drove through the NW corner without stopping en route from Chicago to Michigan); Georgia (changed planes).

Places I want to get to: New Mexico, Louisiana, northern New England. And I want to drive my parents’ stuff home from Florida one year to add a bunch of Southern states to my list.
