For the most part, I am more a fan of herbs than spices. I have at least one exception. And forgive me, I’m kind of cheating. My favorite spice is actually a blend of spices called garam masala. This Indian spice has many varieties. My homemade version includes coriander, cumin, black pepper, nutmeg, turmeric, ginger, mustard powder, and crushed red pepper.
I’m really in to paprika currently.
My spice rack contains 35 herbs and spices, most of which I use fairly regularly. I also have roughly a dozen other spices that I don’t have room for in my spice rack.
If you don’t count black pepper or oregano (herb), the spice I probably use the most is cumin. I’m also a fan of curry powder, which is a blend of spices similar to Michael’s garam masala. I also make a salt free all purpose seasoning mix which is a blend of dried tomatoes, onions, sweet peppers, garlic, chilies and oregano.
I’m gonna try that seasoning mix of yours, Cecily. Sounds delicious!
Mine is a blend, too. It’s my homemade dry rub blend, and it’s great on everything. Meats, tofu, veggies, and fruits like watermelon and mango.
Is it a secret recipe, Heather?
Yes Heather, spill the beans! We would love to hear what your homemade dry rub blend is 🙂
