Hmmm. I’m sure I’ve done sillier, but here’s the first thing that came to mind:
I was once meeting with the only congressperson from Minnesota who could impact a piece of legislation I wanted to pass. The congressperson was not really listening to me. So I leaned in and said — in the company of other advocates — “You ‘da man.”
Yeah, yeah. First, I know that such a phrase is meant to congratulate someone for doing a great thing, but the words just escaped my mouth. Second, he was, in fact, the only one who could make things happen for us.
The rest of the advocates, I swear, sat in silence, some with their jaws dropped.
Did he do what I wanted? No. But he did start listening to the information and request I wanted to make of him.
