I’m going to say ‘The Hobbit’ by J.R.R. Tolkien. Although I suppose there are some who wouldn’t consider that a “classic novel”.
Which, of course, raises the question: what defines a “classic novel”?
Like Lee, some may question my choice of a classic, ‘Johnny Got His Gun,’ by Dalton Trumbo. This anti-war novel, published in 1939, was paused for reprinting by Trumbo and his publisher for good reason during World War II. That said, few writings have affected me as profoundly as this book did.
