As a young child, I fell from a second-story outdoor stairway and wasn’t found for several hours. I was hospitalized for eight days with a severe concussion and aphasia—I spoke in gibberish. I also lost much of my hand-eye coordination, which took a long time to rebuild.
In my most memorable—and recurring—dream, I am back on those stairs.
I walk upward, the sun in my eyes. At the top, I fall.
My Aunt Cathy and Uncle Steve suddenly appear, grabbing my arms as I hang over the railing. They lose their grip, and I fall again. On the way down, my body curls into a fetal position.
I land in a soft chair.
Then I wake up.
