I’m going to choose something by the band Cake. They have three cover songs that I particularly like: ‘I Will Survive’ (originally by Gloria Gaynor), ‘Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps’ (originally by Desi Arnaz, most famously recorded by Doris Day), and ‘Mah Na Mah Na’ (originally from an Italian film, made famous by the Muppets).
Part of my affection for these covers, I suppose, is how much I also like the originals. Don’t make me choose just one!
Give me a few hours and I could probably come up with a Top 50 list. For well-known ones, Johnny Cash’s version of Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt” has to be mentioned. For obscure ones, a personal favorite is local singer PaviElle French’s R&B version of Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams.”
Oh, I like Ben’s recommendation of Johnny Cash’s cover of “Hurt.” I would also add Jack White’s cover of U2’s “Love Is Blindness.” So intense!
I love Gary Jule’s cover of “Mad World” (Tears for Fears), Walk off the Earth’s cover of “Somebody That I Used To Know ” (Gotye) and Two Cellos’ rendition of “Thunderstruck” (AC/DC). And, of course, the previously mentioned Johnny Cash “Hurt”. Like others, I can’t just choose one.
Gary Jules cover of “Mad World” is amazing. I’ll have to check out the cover of “Somebody That I Used to Know.”
Eva Cassidy’s cover of Cindy Lauper’s Time after Time.
I know you love Eva Cassidy’s songs. And Time After Time is a great song, of Cyndi Lauper’s and Eva Cassidy.
