Did you know that the three richest Americans — Jeff Bezos, Warren Buffett, and Bill Gates — now own more wealth than the bottom half of the country. Ask yourself, in a world of scarce resources, is this okay? I, for one, don’t think so.
That’s why, this year, Elizabeth Warren’s embrace of a wealth tax makes me optimistic about the future. Her wealth tax applies only to households with a net worth of $50 million or more—roughly the wealthiest 75,000 households, or the top 0.1%. Households would pay an annual 2% tax on every dollar of net worth above $50 million and a 6% tax on every dollar of net worth above $1 billion.
Are there issues with how the plan would work? Sure. Will her plan become law? I’m skeptical. But simply proposing the plan can help educate the populace about the difference between income and wealth, and how so much of this country’s resources are inaccessible to our current income tax system.
